Hello
I'm Shannon!
I'm a BC Certified Teacher with a master's degree focusing on mathematics education who has been sharing my love of math with students for over 15 years.
I have extensive experience working with students with a wide variety of learning profiles, and love the way that one on one teaching allows me to connect with my students and tailor my instruction to their needs.
My Story
Whether I was helping a neighbour learn to ride their bike when I was in elementary school, or tutoring my friends during study sessions in high school, teaching has long been a passion of mine, and with an early aptitude in math, it was clear that being a math teacher was the right career path for me.

My journey down that road started with a Bachelor of Science degree from Acadia University, where I majored in mathematics and statistics, followed by a Master of Science degree from McMaster University. There, I studied pure mathematics and mathematics education, while researching and writing a thesis on the experiences of first year calculus students. During these years, I built up my teaching experience by worked as a TA and tutor whenever I could. I then pursued formal teaching training with a Bachelor of Education degree (Secondary Option) from the University of British Columbia, and received my BC teaching licence.
During these experiences it became clear to me that the thing I love about teaching is getting to see the light in my students' eyes when concepts final click and they are able to proceed with pride and confidence. For me, the best way to do this is through one on one instruction, as it allows me to connect to my students and fine tune my instruction to work specifically for them.
This realization lead me a learning centre where I spent 12 years I working one on one with students with a wide variety of learning needs including learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, giftedness, anxiety, developmental delays, executive function difficulties and many more. I worked with students as young as 4 all the way up to adults, supporting them with their educational pursuits, whether they were attending school or university, were home-schooled or taking online courses, or were just building up their academic skills.

During that time, I honed my teaching skills and learned to adjust my teaching to the wide variety of students that I worked with. I learned how the brain works, learned how this can influence our teaching practice, and implemented and helped shape individualized educational programs for each of my students.
While teaching math has always been my focus, I have also taught science, physics, chemistry, social studies and language arts. I recognize that academic success requires more than just knowledge, and I have coached my students on study skills, organization, attention, working memory, executive functioning, and social skills to help ensure that they can see success in all areas of their lives.
After the birth of my second child, I decided to offer my tutoring services independently in order to balance the demands of work on family life, and I hope to be able share my expertise with many new faces!
